Whatever you are writing, I can help you to improve it. I hold BA and MFA degrees in English from one of the top universities in the United States, and I have 26 years of experience as a full-time English instructor at the secondary and university levels. I have provided individualised writing instruction to thousands of students and professional clients writing anything from CV's and cover letters to Ph.D dissertations and short stories. I also offer tutoring assistance with writing assignments for a variety of academic subjects.
I can meet remotely via phone or Skype with clients from anywhere in the world. Writing and editing services start with an initial consultation up to 30 minutes in length, during which we discuss the purpose of the piece of writing, your intended audience, and your goals for improvement. I then edit and revise the document to your satisfaction and deliver it to you in the medium of your choice. Use the "Contact Us" form below to request an appointment!
That depends on whether I am assisting you with an academic or professional writing task. If it's an academic task such as a class essay assignment, then I DO NOT write for you, and instead act as an editor, writing guide and coach (see "Is This a Paper Writing Service" below for additional explanation). If I am helping you with a professional writing task such as a CV, cover letter, business blog, or office memorandum, then I can write as much or as little of the actual content as you prefer, but I will always honour your unique ideas and voice.
Most smaller (1 to 2 page) documents (CV's, cover letters, etc.) will be completed in 3-4 business days following our initial consultation. Rush service available (additional fees may apply). Larger writing projects will have a negotiated timetable.
See the "Rates" link at the top of the page for my detailed rate sheet. My base rate for short (1-2 page) documents and tutoring is £30 per hour. For UK clients, I accept bank transfer, PayPal, and cash (for face-to-face visits). For clients from the USA and other countries, I calculate your fee based on your national currency's exchange rate versus GBP, and then payment is submitted via PayPal.
Absolutely. When I previously served as faculty consultant for a university writing centre, I individually advised graduate students and faculty members from across the world, working with clients to revise projects ranging from CV's to full doctoral dissertations. If English is not your first language, I can edit your work by helping you to best express your own unique ideas.
I was originally certified as a secondary English teacher in the U.S. states of Michigan and Indiana, and can provide copies of my original registration upon request. I also hold probationary registration as an English teacher in Scotland, including PVG scheme membership with Disclosure Scotland. I work with secondary students (all ages) through university students, including Ph.D. candidates. Let me assist you in writing effective essays, term papers, research reports, speeches, narratives, or any other writing tasks that your teacher might assign.
In a word, NO. Once a teacher, always a teacher, and I have been one for a long time, so I will not participate in plagiarism (passing off the ideas and/or words of someone else as your own without giving due credit) in any form. However, I will work hard to help you develop your ideas, and to help you select the words and phrases that best illustrate these ideas. I also can help you with research and finding the best information sources to support your ideas. Ultimately, my goal is to help you become the best writer that you can be.
Yes. I spent several summers working as a reader for the national Advanced Placement (AP) English Language and Composition exam in the United States, the curriculum for which is very similar to that of SQA Higher English in Scotland. Generally speaking, for all secondary English exams, I can prepare supplemental lessons and practice exam questions, and then guide students through the most effective strategies for successful exam performance.
On dreich days, I occasionally ask myself that question! My wife is a Glaswegian, and lived in the USA for 25 years. Prior to our permanent move in 2019, I visited Scotland 15 times. I won't ever pretend to be Scottish, but I'll understand what you are saying, and I can drive from Strathaven to Paisley and back again without getting lost.
